Remembering Seve

Mid 90’s I’m at the PGA tournament at the Westchester CC in Rye, NY.  It’s either Thursday or Friday and the place is fairly empty so it’s easy to get around and close to the action.  I’m at the 7th hole, a short, drivable par 4, back then playing low 300 yards.  The hole is dead straight almost until the green and then it doglegs sharply left, with one or more huge, thick trees on the inside of the elbow.  I’m walking on the left side of the fairway and Seve Ballesteros tees off, pulling the shot badly to the left, practically hitting me.  The ball lands in a grass bunker with one of those huge trees lurking immediately in front and the thin part of the green directly behind.  Before he got to it, I had time to evaluate his 2 options…..slim and none.  To me, it looked like his only choice was to bump something low and take his medicine in the rough on the other side of the green.  He gets to his ball and I’m right there.  I can still see the look of consternation on his face as he walks up to the tree and back to his ball a few times.  Then, he starts looking up.  Up?  No way he can go over the tree and not hit it into Connecticut.  He opens up his wedge to the sky and hits a shot that seems to clear the tree by inches.  I pretty much had the same viewing angle as he did from behind the ball, seeing nothing but a disappearing shot.  I heard some clapping, walked around to the green from the left.  The ball was 2 feet from the cup!  A kick-in birdie.  Without a doubt the greatest shot I’ve ever seen and one I still remember vividly some 15 years later.  That was Seve!  He’ll be missed…..
